  1. Find the vehicle’s complete 17-digit VIN number. You can usually find it on the driver-side dashboard near the windshield, on the driver-door jamb label, registration, insurance card, or vehicle title.

  2. Type or paste all 17 characters into the VIN box. Do not use spaces or dashes.

  3. Double-check the VIN before searching. VINs do not use the letters I, O, or Q, so make sure those characters were not entered by mistake.

  4. Click DECODE VIN.

  5. The decoder checks the VIN’s built-in verification digit before looking up the vehicle. If the VIN does not pass that check, recheck every character and enter it again.

  6. When the VIN is accepted, the decoder returns:

    • Year

    • Make

    • Model

    • Engine size and engine code

  7. Use the returned vehicle information to help identify the correct GM module, programming service, or application. For example, the engine result may display as 5.3L (L59).

  8. Before ordering a replacement module, always compare your original module’s service number and verify fitment by VIN. The VIN decoder identifies the vehicle; it does not replace matching the original module number.
