DOD / AFM DISABLE SERVICE
Disabling Active Fuel Management (AFM) A.K.A. Displacement on Demand (DOD) on GM engines keeps all cylinders firing constantly. This prevents annoying vehicle shudder, stops delayed throttle response, reduces excessive oil consumption, and lowers the long-term risk of expensive mechanical valve lifter failure.
Why People Turn Off AFM/DoD
Prevent Lifter Failure: Special collapsing lifters used in these systems can stick and ruin the camshaft. Turning off the switching function lowers that risk.
Better Driveability: It stops the awkward surging or hesitation when the engine rapidly jumps between V4 and V8 modes.
Better Exhaust Sound: It stops the drone or strange tone that happens when the vehicle runs on half its cylinders.
Smoother power: Keeps the engine in full-time V8 mode so it never hesitates or jerks when shifting modes.
Less oil burning: Stops the rapid oil consumption cycles tied to switching cylinders on and off.

Why Software Does Not Fix Hardware
Defective parts remain: A tune or electronic disabler only stops the computer from commanding the engine into V4 mode. The physical, complex spring-loaded AFM lifters remain inside the engine.
Wear still happens: The specialized lifters still cycle with the pushrods and camshaft and rely on complex internal locking pins and oil pressure. Even though shutting off the 4 cylinder mode may help prevent lifter failure , they can still collapse, stick, or fail mechanically.
Noise means damage: If you already hear a ticking or tapping noise, a mechanical component has likely already started wearing out or collapsing. Turning off the system electronically will not make that physical wear or noise go away.
The Only Real Solutions
If it is already ticking/knocking/misfiring: You must physically replace the damaged lifters (and often the camshaft if it has been scored or flattened).
To permanently eliminate risk: You need a hard mechanical delete. This requires physically removing the AFM lifters, replacing the camshaft with a standard non-AFM version, replacing the valley cover, and permanently reprogramming the computer.
